Simaho is a Non-governmental health organization for Women Professionals Nurses and non-professionals. it started life as a self-help group in 1994. Its 18 founder members, all of them women, were driven by a vision to improve the health status of women and children in Garissa County. SIMAHO then registered as a community-based organization in 1996 and as a non-governmental organization in 2009.
In the course of those 16 years, SIMAHO has established itself as a professional, value-driven provider of quality health services to some of the most vulnerable groups in Kenya, particularly pastoralist women and children who live far from mainstream health services. SIMAHO has a unique approach in their daily health care services whereby women environment has been created thus encourage more women and their partners increase health seeking behavior. SIMAHO has an integrated health and behavior change project that includes advocacy and awareness forums targeting harmful cultural practices i.e, FGM and others. The organization has several approaches that has been used as tools for fighting FGM;-
- Islamic scholars/Islamic perspective
- FGM prohibition act(through Government administration)
- Negative health consequences on girls and women(Daily health education at facility during child welfare services )
The organization has built strong partnership with national Government, County Government as well as range of local and international organizations as steps to strengthen its sustainability. Its body ofGovernance and management have been recognized for their dedication and services to the community on HIV/Aids services and Maternal Child health /reproductive health services by the County Government of Garissa .
